MATERIALS
Let’s start with the basics, using a medium-weight yarn to create our pumpkin. For this pattern, I’m using Loops & Threads Soft Classic Yarn in the Clay color, which gives the pumpkin a warm, earthy tone perfect for fall. This yarn is soft, easy to work with, and ideal for beginners. To match the yarn's thickness, I’m using a 5.0mm crochet hook, which will help create even stitches and a nice, sturdy fabric. Approx 68 yards.
Crochet 24 chain.
Start a SC stitch on the second chain from the hook... completing 23 SC stitches.
Make sure you insert your hook through both loops to maintain tight, even stitches.
There's no need to count your stitches with this pattern—just make sure to crochet a single crochet stitch into each stitch, and you'll be good to go. It's the perfect project to work on while watching your favorite show or binge-watching a series. You can relax and enjoy the process without worrying about losing your place, making it an ideal work-in-progress for some laid-back crafting time.
Continue repeating your rows until the piece reaches a length of 11 inches.
Fold the piece in half. Line up your stitches and do a SC on each stitch to form a cylinder shape. Fasten off leaving a long tail.
With your darning needle, thread the yarn tail and run a stitch on the top edge
Pull the tail to cinch close
Stitch the remaining opening closed, secure the yarn, and fasten off.
Thread the top part with your darning needle and tail yarn tail and run a stitch on the top edge
Before closing in - stuff the pumpkin with a few handfuls of fiber fill until it reaches your desired plumpness.
Pull the tail to cinch close and stitch the remaining opening.
To shape the pumpkin, insert yarn needle into the pumpkin (center).
Pull through to the bottom of your pumpkin (center), pull tight. Pull tight to sort of “squish” your pumpkin.
To make the classic pumpkin segments, wrap the yarn around the outside of the pumpkin and insert the needle back through the top center, pulling it through the bottom again.
Repeat this process to create as many segments as you like, usually 4-6. Adjust the tension of the yarn to achieve the desired shape.
To create the stem, we'll use some cinnamon sticks and cut it down to desired size.
Use glue gun to secure in place.
Wrap the twine around the stick (better to hide visible glue) and tie a bow with for an extra touch of cuteness!
Using the same pumpkin pattern with different yarn types and weights creates a delightful variety in both appearance and texture. A bulky yarn gives the pumpkin a plump, cozy feel, prefect for adding warmth to any fall decor. On the other hand, a finer yarn offers a more delicate, intricate look, making the pumpkin ideal for sophisticated or small er spaces. By experimenting with different yarns, you can create a collection of pumpkins that are unified in design yet wonderfully diverse in their overall effect. Here are some samples to inspire your creativity.
No matter the yarn or hook size you choose, crocheting pumpkins with this pattern is a fun and creative way to personalize your fall decor. Each combination of materials brings out a unique look and feel, allowing you to craft a collection that reflects your style. Whether you're going for rustic charm, modern elegance, or something in between, these handmade pumpkins are sure to add warmth and character to your home.
